IBM is deepening its strategic alliance with Microsoft with the creation of a new Microsoft Practice within IBM Consulting. Designed to help clients more effectively harness AI, cloud, and security innovations, the move, which was announced on April 29, signals IBM’s ambition to deliver stronger, measurable business outcomes across industries navigating rapid digital transformation. 

Aligning Strategic Consulting with Microsoft’s Technology Stack 

The Microsoft Practice will combine IBM’s deep consulting expertise with Microsoft’s technology portfolio, including Copilot, Azure OpenAI, Azure Cloud, Microsoft Fabric, and Sentinel. The goal: provide business leaders with a unified approach to driving growth, reducing operational costs, and building long-term competitive advantage.

 In 2020, multinational water, waste management and energy services company Veolia supplied 95 million people with drinking water internationally, 62 million with wastewater service, produced nearly 43 million megawatt hours of energy – and converted 47 million metric tons of waste, with a recorded consolidated revenue of €26bn.

At the same time, Veolia found itself struggling with a Shared Service Center (SSC) serving 30 entities of the group, performing inefficient legacy operations as it was to post incoming invoices. It was time for something to change, but its Czech team in charge of invoice processing was too big and inflexible, with the process being fragmented across entities. For this reason, the SSC decided to launch a new vision of unified invoice navigation and centralize its process, increasing digitization with the help of Rossum, an AI-first platform for end-to-end transactional document processing.

Enhancing the process with RPA and AI

The SSC leadership began by convincing all stakeholders that an overhaul of the internal process held great potential, with the company then embarking on its collaboration with transactional document automation company, Rossum.

However, the assignment wasn’t like any other; Veolia’s SSC director Ondrej Beranek, explained to ERP Today that the cohort of accountants working in the SSC consisted of people who have been in the profession for a very long time. “It’s important to say that most of the accountants had been working in that position since the time I was born and that’s over 50 percent of them. So to change their way of thinking was the hardest thing in the beginning.”

Before the proof of concept (POC), the accountants printed all documents they received as standard. But after the POC demonstrated that the new plan was solid, the team was able to cut this down and the team now openly communicates to its vendors that they don’t accept anything else except electronic invoices – no matter the particular file format.

Partnering up with Rossum on a new unified invoice navigation process, the chosen solution involved invoices arriving in a centralized entity-specific email inbox managed by a UiPath robot and built by the robotic process automation (RPA) consultancy InnovationPath.

The company started using RPA to extract information from invoices such as due dates, as well as an AI tool they call ‘Artificial Accountant’, with Rossum helping train other AI additions to facilitate auto accounting.

The solution was a UiPath robot built by RPA consultancy InnovationPath.

“As a result, we cut the necessity to print,” Beranek says. “Previously the rate was above 80 percent; we are now oscillating between 4 and 6 percent of paper invoices that we still accept from new vendors. But we are pushing them hard to send them via email. It’s getting better and better, but it is most difficult when it comes to invoices from manual labor”.

Although not initially sold on the idea of AI as part of their daily work, when the senior accountants got familiar with the new approach and realized its benefits, they openly embraced the changes. At the same time, Veolia’s AI Associates (the most technically savvy group of former data entry clerks) started operating mainly in Rossum’s validation interface to quickly review documents and handle any exceptions from the norm.

Rossum’s final output is a standardized EDI message which is paired with the other email attachments and sent to each entity’s downstream ERP.

The numbers don’t tell the full story

While continuing to enable Veolia’s work with an overwhelming number of vendors – 60,000  in the Czech Republic alone – the new system has also decreased the need for further clarifications and one-to-one phone calls with vendors, further streamlining the process.

As time went by and some of the accountants reached their pension age and retired, the newcomers were also taught the same process with no impediments, continuing on the same strategy.

In another crucial step for the team, Veolia was able to rework its structure and continue to change the way it treats invoices, with the accountants having time to specialize in high-impact accounting tasks. At the same time, partnering with a foundation in the Czech Republic, the team welcomed new employees from disadvantaged backgrounds, such as people with disabilities that impacted their ability to perform traditional labor and therefore empowered to make a stable living.

This new cohort of mostly remote workers was equipped with laptops and specialized desk equipment as needed to became a valuable part of Veolia’s work. At the same time, the group effort and the work of the AI Associates in the Shared Service Center allowed it to speed up invoice processing by eight times, with time-saving efficiency reaching up to 87.5 percent.

Beranek says that the strategy followed goes to show that when implementing a solution, it’s not just the technology and the numbers that make a difference, “It’s actually change management and convincing people to change their ways” to achieve extraordinary results.

Another technology once seen as a disruptor, blockchain, has now found its niche in auditing digital assets. “We need to understand and audit digital assets as part of our procedures,” says Goodhew, with EY’s blockchain analyzer becoming an example of how auditors are leveraging technology to manage emerging risks and opportunities.

By integrating technology risk management into their workflows, auditors can proactively address potential vulnerabilities while maintaining trust with clients and stakeholders.

For example, EY’s Canvas and Helix platforms provide auditors with advanced workflows and data analytics capabilities. Goodhew shares an example: “Canvas AI compares risks across engagements and uses external data to recommend adjustments to audit strategies.” Such tools empower auditors to make data-driven decisions, enhancing efficiency and accuracy.

To prepare auditors for emerging technologies, EY involves professionals in the development and testing of new tools. “We’ve engaged 10,000 auditors in testing technology,” says Jeschonneck. Programs like digital badges and specialized networks further equip auditors with the skills they need to thrive in a tech-driven environment.

Another standout initiative is EYQ Assurance Knowledge, a generative AI-powered tool that integrates with EY’s knowledge base, which Goodhew explains “enables auditors to quickly access relevant methodology and standards, saving time and ensuring accuracy”.

Accenture and Google Cloud are teaming up on an initiative to accelerate the adoption of cloud solutions and generative AI capabilities within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The move will address local data, operational and software sovereignty needs by establishing a modern digital core and scaling generative AI agents that will help organizations create new business opportunities and improve customer experience.  

The collaboration will extend Accenture and Google Cloud’s joint Generative AI Center of Excellence (CoE) to Saudi Arabia to make its solutions, products and assets, including generative AI agents, available to local organizations.  

“Being ready for continuous reinvention hinges on a modern digital core to rapidly seize every opportunity. We’re expanding our joint Accenture and Google Cloud Generative AI CoE to bring new capabilities to the region and transform how Saudi organizations can reinvent products, services and experiences,” said Dr. Majid Altuwaijri, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia chair and country managing director at Accenture, in a statement.  

“Our partnership with Google Cloud aims to help clients in Saudi Arabia accelerate business outcomes in new ways. We are unique because our strategy brings together key stakeholders to pioneer digital sovereignty and to develop systems that are not only secure and compliant but also resilient and future ready,” he said.

PwC UK, together with alliance partners Harvey and OpenAI, has announced the launch of its UK tax-trained AI model. 

The tool made available to all 2,300 PwC UK tax professionals will play the role of an AI assistant generating tax content as part of the delivery of services to clients.

Built on a foundation of PwC UK’s tax expertise, with underlying technology developed by Harvey and OpenAI, it has combined tax and technology skills that promise an AI asset that turns knowledge into outcomes for users.

Laura Hinton, tax, legal and workforce leader of PwC UK, said: “Generative AI is transformative and presents unprecedented possibilities for both our people and our clients.

“Our approach will always be human-led, tech-powered and AI will complement our expertise, allowing our subject matter experts to deliver deeper, more robust and transparent insights to our clients.”

Tax professionals will use the AI assistant tool for cross-referencing as it has been trained on case law, legislation and other underlying sources, together with PwC UK’s IP, with the data regularly refreshed to reflect changes and updates to tax rules.

As a result, the model is said to generate higher quality and accuracy in the tax domain when compared to publicly available Large Language Models, allowing for transparent validation by tax professionals.

“By leveraging the cutting-edge technology of Harvey and OpenAI, we have created a unique AI asset that combines deep tax knowledge with natural language processing and generation capabilities,” Winston Weinberg, co-founder and president of Harvey, commented. “This is a prime example of how AI can augment human expertise and transform the way professional services are delivered.” 

Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer of OpenAI, said: “We’re seeing a surge in the practical application of AI being built on our platform. The innovative AI assistant built by PwC and Harvey is a prime example of AI’s power to supercharge the capabilities of knowledge workers and enhance the customer experience. 

This latest development is part of PwC’s wider strategy to lead the professional services market in the adoption of AI and technology and help users benefit from the changing environment they operate in.

The partnership was first announced in October last year, underpinned by PwC’s adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise for general use within PwC UK. In addition, the collaboration is set to involve HR/Workforce AI models expected to be rolled out in the coming months.
